Incorrect Flywheel Position

It is possible to fit the flywheel in the incorrect position. If this occurs, the engine will run very badly with a very low manifold vacuum and a consequent rich mixture.

Check flywheel position using the following procedure:

  1. Set N° one piston at TDC.
  2. Use white paint or Tippex to mark the tooth on the flywheel that is directly located under the CAS.
  3. Slowly turn the engine in a clockwise direction whilst counting the teeth. Eight teeth (including the one that is marked) should pass the under the CAS before the large double tooth reaches the CAS.

Ignition Faults

  1. If the CAS is faulty, the engine may cut-out and then fail to start.
  2. The coil/amplifier pack has been known to fail.

Faulty Camshaft Oil Seal

If the camshaft seal is faulty, oil may enter the distributor and this will adversely affect the ignition spark quality and distribution.

Faulty CTS

The CTS is made of steel that may corrode and the signal may short to earth. Ensure correct replacement type is fitted. NTC type has black body and the PTC type has white body.

Faulty Turbo By-pass Valve

A perished diaphragm is a common fault in most turbo charged engines that utilise a by-pass valve.
