Omitec, suppliers of garage test equipment and diagnostics to the automotive market, have supplied VOSA with their portable Diesel Smokemeter, the OmiSmoke, for roadside ‘spot checks’ on vehicle emissions.
VOSA has pledged to assist the UK in its mission to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 12.5% below 1990 levels in line with the Kyoto commitment and move towards a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions below 1990 levels by 2010, hence the arrival of the spot checks to take the worst polluting vehicles off the road and to make the motoring public aware of the importance of maintaining vehicles and keeping to the legal emission limits all year, and not just for the MOT.
The OmiSmoke has provided a convenient and mobile solution for the roadside emission checks as it is a compact and light diesel emissions tester with category A and B approvals for MOT Class 4, 5, 6 and 7 vehicles.
The OmiSmoke can be used as an integral part of a complete VOSA compliant PC emissions system from Omitec, The EmiEmissionsCenter. VOSA also had a requirement to test the new low emission-engined vehicles which can be achieved with the OmiSmoke with its Patented Acoustic Sensor that allows testing of low emission diesels.
If vehicles that are spot checked and found to be seriously in breech of the legal emissions limits, drivers will receive a prohibition notice to prevent use of the vehicle. Therefore, the OmiSmoke can be of great benefit within a workshop so regular checks can be carried out to make sure emission levels are within the legal limit and prevent vehicles being taken off the road.
